Any of you East Coast types want to hang out?

I have a date for hanging out with one of the KoLers to be set up, but that's easy since she lives in Manasshole apparently.

Sent out a bunch of feelers for Letters of Recommendation yesterday. Heard back from two day, both former professors, both of whom remember me and are willing to recommend me.

So far, so yay!

A national embarassment

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 11:37 AM

In the past I have remarked on the infiltration and usurpation of the Talibanelical church into the armed forces of the United States.

The Air Force Academy and West Point are now hot beds of Talibangelical teachings. A radicalizing of our military into a "Defenders of the faith" mentality.

Let's forget that there are many faiths, and lack thereof in this country, and the fact that there are elected officials casting dispersions and ginning up fears against some of them in the public forum. Let's also forget the secular nature of America and believe for one second that the Founders were all Evangelical born again holy rollers and they wrote wording and phrasing of the Constitution that for some reason was opposite of those beliefes and this is a Christian Nation despite the facts......

This is how radical Islam took hold, and once the military and the government were fundamentalized, any manner of atrocity became the norm "Under God".......

Proof of this embarrassment, and the Talibangelical indoctrination of our troops:

Religion is a poison that eliminates reason.

Welcome the very well armed American Taliban! All non believers will soon be rounded up and dealt with accordingly.....

Hot Island

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 10:46 AM
So last night I made myself a hot toddy. And I noticed that we had some rum and gin sitting on the counter, next to the whiskey. So I added a little of those to it, too.

I call it a Hot Island, and it was gooooood.

Pretty good.

Tired.

Too much to do today.

Stupid cyst started acting up last night and I'm on a ton of ibuprofen. I'm trying to avoid taking any vicodin because it will knock my ass out.

More later when I'm not hurting.

OH, and apparently the Steelers remembered how to play football yesterday. About damn time!

Dollhouse

  • Dec. 19th, 2009 at 5:03 PM
I watched 6 hours of Dollhouse last night. I'm glad that Joss finally got a warning when one of his shows was being killed off, so that he could end it in an appropriate fashion. I watched it go from The Matrix to The Cell, and that was just in one episode. I think that there are only 3 episodes left, starting in January. This is some seriously good stuff.

Not a bad day at all...

  • Dec. 18th, 2009 at 11:00 PM
So I made it to the test on time this morning. A little tired, but not TOO bad. I worked my way through the GRE General Test in about 3 hours (breaks are for PUSSIES!) and got to the dreaded question at the end:

"Do you want to abandoned these scores or report them?"

This is SUCH an unfair question. Because you don't know what your score IS until you answer it. Did you do well? Did you do poorly? Could you have done better? You don't ACTUALLY know. But you still have to answer.

There were a few questions I thought I could do better on, but...

Fuggit. Balls to the wall. Besides, there's no room in my schedule to take it again and still get in for Fall Term.

It asked me to confirm and I clicked it as quickly as I could.

My score popped up on the screen.

I admit, I cried a little. Well, my eyes teared up. It took work to keep things there, though.

Verbal: 780/800
Quantitative: 720/800

The Essays haven't been graded yet, because they have to be sent in to human graders, but I'm confident.

Now I just need to concentrate on applications for a few days and things will be out of my hands until... summer.

In related news, the state of OH decided to continue subsidizing my job search until about April.

Life... she is not too bad just about now.

GRE: Take 1

  • Dec. 17th, 2009 at 10:13 PM
So I got up this morning, raced around, got prepped and miraculously caught the 8:15 car ferry, [info]babymonkey trailing behind me like the very sleepy tail of a comet.

Drove a fair portion of the day to get to Lebanon, NH, braved the cold again to walk into the ETS office EXACTLY one-hour before my time-slot.

I announced myself at the front desk, there was a clatter of keys, and I was told that I wasn't scheduled until tomorrow.

No, I told her, you are mistaken. I'm scheduled for today. Thursday, December 18th.

No, I was told in response, YOU are mistaken. You are scheduled for tomorrow. FRIDAY, December 18th.

I checked a calendar and retreated, chagrined.

[info]babymonkey has been very understanding about the whole thing, never once playing me for waking her early and sticking her in a car for 5-6 hours for no purpose. She even held her mirth in check until I admitted that yes, okay, it might actually be funny now.

On the plus side, we now know EXACTLY how to get to the place and PRECISELY where to park. "Getting there" was just the last part of the testing process I hadn't studied for. Now it's checked off my list and I will sleep easy tonight.

Which is a damn good thing, because I have to be up at 7:00 *AGAIN* tomorrow to do it all again. :-D

So we got Guitar Hero: World Tour (aka Guitar Hero IV) for the PS3 last night. Great deal, only $28. Should work with Rock Band games, as well as the other Guitar Hero games. This will be awesome, right?

Tonight I set it up and put the disc in to play around and make my avatar...and learned that I can't plug all three peripherals in. The game comes with a guitar, drum set, and microphone. The guitar and drum set are wireless, having antenna that plug into the 2 USB ports on the front of the PS3. The microphone has a cord...and no USB port to plug into because the two on the front are already taken by the drums and guitar.

wtf?!

So...anyone know how we fix this? Do we get a USB splicer so we can plug in all three, or am I stupid with electronics and not know what I'm doing? This is a PS3 specific issue as far as I can tell, and the user reviews on Amazon don't mention this problem. There HAS to be some sort of solution, but I don't know what it is.

HELP!?

EDIT: talked to a friend who has a PS3 and he said a simple USB splitter will fix the situation. YAY!

I just took my first full-fledged, timed Practice Test for the GRE.

In Math, I was... less than pleased. 610, meaning that only 46% of test takers did worse than I did.

On the positive side, I'm not trying to get into a grad school on my scientific or mathematical credentials.

Verbal... 740. Out of 800. 99% of test takers scored lower.

I am no longer worrying myself sick about my Vocabulary review.

Getting up in time for the car ferry tomorrow, on the other hand? TERRIFIED.

So last night - a brief history - I had been having some pain in my right side for about 3 days. It was getting worse, and then better, and then worse again. The problem was, it was RIGHT where the appendix is. So, after a wave of pain hit last night, I went to the ER.

Now, the first nurse that attended to me? She was nice until I yelped when she put the needle in to get blood out of the back of my right hand, and it came pouring out of the cap area, over my hands, on the blankets, and onto the floor. Then she got irritated with me. Mind you, this is after I told her that she would not be able to find a vein in my right arm where she was looking, she tried anyway and blew a vein before the needle ever got fully in. Dude, listen to me, I know of what I speak. I know my own history with needles.

Yes, I yelped. It's kind of disturbing having your blood pouring out of what I thought was a closed piece until the tubes for the blood were put in. So sue me, I was startled.

The doctor however, and her second nurse were extremely nice. The doctor got me down for a cat-scan.

After about 5 hours total, in which I could not sleep at all because the beds aren't really comfy; the answer came back. I have a 4+ cm (just one, mind you) - almost two inches in diameter, ovarian cyst right in that general area. It's twisting. It's big, and it's not close to bursting yet. She gave me some pain meds, and sent me home with a warning to call my doc to see what we can do. I got home around 3 am. Needless to say I was late to work today.

Ughs, I thought I was over the big, painful, cysts. Not so much. Blah.

At least it wasn't the appendix. Maybe I can break the curse of being sick over Thanksgiving/Christmas, cause seriously, it's getting a bit tiring for this girl. I want to go to the gym, enjoy my holidays and lose enough weight to look seriously killer for [info]auroracita's wedding in May. Hey, allow me a bit of ego here!

Those are my goals.

Well that and a few other things, but ya know..

I just registered for the GREs. For this Wednesday.

[EDIT: Thursday. This Thursday. I have 48 hours to study, not 24.]

I don't know if I'm about to go "SQUEEEE!" or throw up. :-/

(In my defense, I've been preparing for a few months, but now MONEY is on the table. That makes it that much more real.)

First - for [info]sidhedevil and others!

The reason why vampires shouldn't sparkle. Right. There.

So last night, a virus that had been on the computer (though virus scan didn't catch it) - wouldn't let me do anything, even roll back. ARGHS.

So I reinstalled Windows. I couldn't find my code key so I used one from online. But I can't activate it, which means I get to call Microsoft today for a new key code. Woo?

I also found something that retrieved ALL of my files from before the wipe. I'll toss my music back on and let everything else fade. I have backups of everything else anyway.

So if it works, in the end I didn't lose everything. Which is good.

And I *am* losing weight finally! The scale is moving correctly! It isn't a dream!
(Mind you, it's only 3 pounds, but it's 3 pounds!) - I upped my water intake and stopped eating after 6 - 7 pm at night. That with the gym seems to be doing it.

Sweet!

Walking with Bear: Part XV

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 8:41 PM
So I'm sitting at the end of a table, in a bar, at an ungodly hour of the morning, with a gaggle of friends that aren't actually mine. Andrea had invited me out to a production of "Hair!" that some old classmates of hers were appearing in. So, what with one thing and another, we'd stayed around after the show, congratulating her friends and telling them - truthfully - what a fantastic show it had been and then got caught up in the declaration of an impromptu cast party. I had tried to join in the flow of conversation once or twice, but I couldn’t quite make a go of it. I'd been introduced around, of course, but I was still outside the close knit familiarity and a bit intimidated by the fact that I'd just seen most of them dancing naked around the stage. So, as the talk and the laughter washed back and forth around the table, I sat at the end, nursing my beer and surfing the periphery of the conversations... with Bear.

There be Dragons under the cut... )

no keg rental for me

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 5:29 PM
Things I learned today:

You CAN rent a keg of cider in Indianapolis, at least from one liquor store.
Renting said keg would be about $200 including the tap.
A keg is roughly equivalent to 330 twelve ounce drinks.
